Volunteering with the Department of Juvenile Services

The Department of Juvenile Services is committed to improving the lives of youth in the state of Maryland, reducing recidivism and improving public safety in the community. DJS counts on volunteers, community/civic organizations, and corporate groups to contribute to the success of our youth.

The Maryland Department of Juvenile Services (DJS) believes that, through volunteers, the community has the ability to enhance lives of youth by providing meaningful activities and resources that promote pro-social, educational, emotional growth, spiritual guidance, and healthy family relationships. 

The mission of the DJS Volunteer Services Program is to maximize community resources and utilize volunteers to provide opportunities that enable youth to become responsible and productive citizens. The volunteer services program is administered by a qualified Community Services Coordinator, who provides continuous support to DJS volunteers.​​​

Partnership opportunities

The Department of Juvenile Services seeks volunteers from organizations and individuals to provide youth with enriching experiences that will make a positive impact in their lives.

Here are some examples for services we are looking for groups or individuals to provide:​

  • Religious education
  • Meditation or yoga
  • Career development
  • Tutors (STEM, reading, writing)
  • Book club
  • Chess clubs
  • Life skills
  • Art programs
  • Dance and theater workshops

Qualifications

  • Volunteers must be at least 18 years old
  • Must agree to submit to a records background check
  • Sufficient background and maturity to handle confidential information
  • Excellent sense of humor and inviting personality
  • Ability to work with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds​

  1. Apply: Complete and submit an application

  2. Fingerprinting: After your application has been reviewed you will be sent an email to schedule fingerprinting.
  3. Reference Check: Once all background clearances are received your references will be contacted.
  4. Mandatory Training: You will be contacted by the community services coordinator to schedule mandatory training.​
  5. Placement: You will tour the facility and work with the facility liaison to determine your schedule.
