About the Cheltenham

  • Serves male and female
  • Serves youth from Prince George's, Montgomery, Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles and St. Mary's Counties
  • Capacity: up to 72
  • Youth held here while they await their court date or placement
  • Staff trained in trauma-informed care
  • Dietary, medical, dental and counseling services on premises
  • Educational program in the facility year round, five days a week for six hours a day
  • Recreation space and recreational programming

Note updated visitation procedures for this facility: In addition to regularly scheduled facility visitation, non-routine visitation requires a 24-hour RSVP to the case manager and cannot interfere with school.

Cheltenham history

The Cheltenham Youth Detention Center originally opened in 1870. In 1937, it was known as the Cheltenham School for Boys. Twelve years later, the facility was renamed Boys' Village of Maryland. The facility was called the Cheltenham Youth Facility from 1992 until 2016 when the new facility opened as Cheltenham Youth Detention Center.
